Arborvitae (Thuja species), but especially the Green Giants and American Pillars are popular evergreen trees or shrubs commonly used for hedging, screening, or as a focal point in landscaping. They can grow 4ā a year under ideal conditions. Their ideal soil includes the following characteristics:

Soft: Easy expansion for the roots mass.
Well drained: Overwatering is non issue as excess water drains away.
PH level: Slightly acidic.
Rich in organic matter: they love nutrition.
Pine Bark
For these reasons most nurseries in the Eastern US use pine bark as their growing medium with fertilizer mixed in. A few nurseries also use leaf compost or sand.
