Privacy Trees: Green Giant Arborvitae Planted 4' Apart

A common question from privacy seeking and tree loving property owners is how far apart should the trees should be space.

A general rule of thumb, Green Giant Arborvitae should be spaced 2-3’ away from the fence or property line. Occasionally a customer tells us to go 5’ away from the property line as they do not want a potentially difficult neighbor in the future to hurt the trees.

We generally recommend to plant the trees 5’ apart as this allows for the feeling of a green wall to show as soon as the trees are around 12’. This is because the lower 50% of the green giant is bushy and thick, while the top 50% is the vertical shoot. This means that the lower section locks together at 6’ and most neighboring activities would be invisible.

In the Following year if the trees put on 3” new growth, the interlocking lower 50% of the trees should come together at 7.5’ height.

When Green Giant Arborvitae are planted 5’ apart, they should peak around 25’ height. Population space and size have an inverse correlation. More space results in larger trees, up to the genetic code of the tree.
